On Tuesday February 6, 2008 the San Francisco Chronicle reported:
"I gave a fundraiser at his (Obama's) request at the Waterfront restaurant," said former San Francisco Mayor Wille Brown. "And he said to me, he would really appreciate it if he didn't get his photo taken with my Mayor. He said he would really not like to have his picture taken with Gavin."
On January 26, 2007, in an interview at the World Economic Forum in Davos,
Switzerland, Newsom was asked about three potential Democratic Presidential candidates -- Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and Al Gore in the context of the controversy over his announcement in 2004 that San Francisco would allow same-sex marriages. "One of the three Democrats you mentioned as presidential candidates, as God is my witness, will not be photographed with me," Newsom told Reuters, "even through I've done fundraisers for that particular person not once but twice -- because of this issue."
On August 7, 2007, with Hillary Clinton at his side, Gavin Newsom endorsed Clinton for President. That same day, in an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle, Newsom
noted that even while Clinton supports civil unions and Newsom supports marriage,
his conversations with Hillary on civil rights for the LGBT community showed a "depth" and "understanding" that Obama does not share.
